Risk Management for Electronic Equipment
Actions to be taken following a loss-producing event
Notwithstanding the steps taken for the complete prevention of
the loss, necessary precautions taken at the appropriate time
can minimise the loss to a considerable extent following the operation
of a peril. Certain steps can ensure minimisation of the loss
to a great deal which is beneficial to the insured and the insurer
alike.
Damage caused by fire:
- Immediately on occurrence of or after a fire one must ensure
that the equipments are disconnected from the main power supply
- Immediate steps should be taken to ensure that the smoke finds
its way out from the room housing the equipments within minimum
possible time. This reduces the chances of the soot getting
deposited on the ports of the equipments, as well as the harmful
constituents of smoke affecting them
- The equipments should be shifted to another room which has
not been affected by the fire as quickly as possible
- Portable air blowers/ driers may be used to reduce the humidity
in the affected room or the room where the affected equipments
have been shifted to minimise the chances of possible corrosion
caused by constituents of the smoke deposits like hydrochloric
acid
- Prior to carrying out any repairs to the building affected
by fire adequate steps should be taken to protect the equipments
from any further damages.
Damage caused by water:
- The equipment should be disconnected from the main power
supply, immediately
- Water should be dried up at the earliest by mopping up the
floor and taking other necessary steps
- In case of any seepage from the roof, immediate steps should
be taken to cover the equipment. The exact source of leakage
should be plugged at the earliest
- All the other assets affected by the water should be removed
from the room where the electronic equipment is stored to reduce
the moisture in the air
- The wet equipment should be segregated, opened by experts
and dried with the help of warm air
Damages caused by accumulation of dusts or by chemicals:
- Equipment highly sensitive to dust should be switched off
immediately. Other equipment should also be switched off since
the layers of dust may reduce the heat dissipation and lead
to overheating of the equipment
- The source of dust should be identified and plugged off immediately
to prevent further ingress of dust and consequent damage to
the equipment
- In case of possible damages by use of fire extinguishing
powder like DCP, the surrounding area should be kept dry
